Pilgrim’s Progress
John Bunyan; retold by Tim Dowley
Steve Smallman, illustrator
A classic Christian story grippingly retold for a
new generation
W
hen Christian sets out from the City of Destruction with
a heavy burden on his back, he has no idea what he’s
getting himself into. All he knows is that he must escape the
predicted judgment. As he makes his way along the road toward
the Celestial City, he encounters many dangers—a treacherous
swamp, roaring lions, hungry giants, a dreadful monster, and
many people who tempt him to turn back, go an easier way, or
abandon his quest altogether.
As he presses on with the help of friends and guardians, he
discovers that while the path is narrow, the road is winding,
and there are many obstacles, the reward is beyond anything
he could imagine.
Beautifully valuable lessons—of a story that has stood the
test of time.
John Bunyan (1628–88) was a Puritan preacher and English
writer best known for The Pilgrim’s Progress, which has never
been out of print since its publication in 1678 and has sold an esti-
mated 250 million copies.
Tim Dowley writes and edits resources on biblical studies and
church history for a new generation. He has traveled extensively,
particularly in Israel, Turkey, and other biblical lands, and lives in
London with his wife and family.
