Kregel Title Selected for 2017 TGC Book Awards

December 13, 2017

GRAND RAPIDS, MI—The Mentoring Church: How Pastors and Congregations Cultivate Leaders by Phil A. Newton was named ministry book of the year at The Gospel Coalition's 2017 Book Awards.

Ivan Mesa of The Gospel Coalition said: "With theological education in crisis, Newton’s copiously researched and well-written book is both timely and needed. Churches must be ready to step into the breach. This book will get them ready for that crucial task."

The Mentoring Church is written with insightful consideration of theological, historical, and contemporary training models for pastor/church partnerships, and provides a reliable guide to developing a church culture that equips fully prepared leaders.

Phil A. Newton, PhD, DMin, is senior pastor at South Woods Baptist Church in Memphis, Tennessee. His previous books include The Way of Faith and Elders in Congregational Life.

This is the second year that The Gospel Coalition held the TGC Book Awards, and Kregel has won in the ministry category both years. In 2016, Sensitive Preaching to the Sexually Hurting by Sam Serio was honored with the ministry award.

The Gospel Coalition initiated the TGC Book Awards to highlight books that offer gospel-centered argument and application, include faithful use of Scripture, foster spiritual discernment, and encourage efforts to unite and renew the church. TGC’s council members, key contributors, and editors identified one winner and one runner-up in nine categories. The full list can be found online at http://bit.ly/2B9FmYk.
