When Christian sets out from the City of Destruction with a heavy burden on his back, he has no idea what he's getting himself into. All he knows is that he must escape the predicted judgment. As he makes his way along the road toward the Celestial City, he encounters many dangers—a treacherous swamp, roaring lions, hungry giants, a dreadful monster, and many people who tempt him to turn back, go an easier way, or abandon his quest altogether.

As he presses on with the help of friends and guardians, he discovers that while the path is narrow, the road is winding, and there are many obstacles, the reward is beyond anything he could imagine.

John Bunyan (1628-1688) was a Puritan preacher and writer born in Elstow, England. He wrote Pilgrim's Progress during his twelve-year imprisonment in Bedford jail. Upon his release, he became the pastor of a church in Bedford, England.
